Oats themselves are naturally gluten free when in their purest form, however they often become contaminated with gluten. When processed oats are often done in the same facilities as gluten containing grains such as wheat therefore resulting in cross contamination. As a result we chose to use gluten free oats to be as inclusive as possible. At the end of the day we would hate for someone to miss out on Crookies when something can be so simply amended.
But why use oats all together you ask? Oats are a wholegrain making them a great source of complex carbohydrates and full of fibre. Not only this but they contain an abundance of valuable nutrients making them all round ‘golden’ ingredients to use when creating a delicious sweet treat, remember oats aren’t just for the baked oats trend.
This rich yet delicate nut is not only delicious but also incredibly nutritious! Have you ever heard your favourite health gurus go on about how a perfect handful of nuts is when you’re feeling a tad peckish? They’re not just saying it for no reason, these little morsels are full of heart healthy fats and also pack in a protein punch. Just one handful of cashews contains 5g of protein as well as a whole host of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, zinc and iron. Do we need to say anymore!
Is it just us or do almonds seem to be the holy grail in the nut world! Peanut butter was so last year and we’re not complaining about it, almond butter is definitely a winner in our eyes. The world’s best source of Vitamin E, as well as yet again another great source of heart healthy fats and plant protein. By including almond butter in our Crookies you’re bound to feel satisfied for longer thanks to their satiating properties.
Where your regular cookie uses butter we opt for coconut oil. Instead of getting that sluggish feeling after a fatty snack, coconut oil helps with giving you an extra energy boost that we all need from time to time. High in saturated fats and fatty acids a splash of coconut oil in each Crookie helps not only with creating the perfect cookie texture, but also in aiding in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, making it our favourite source of healthy fats.
A sweet treat without the refined sugar sounds impossible right? Well that's why we use maple syrup. Yes, at the end of the day maple syrup is still relatively high in sugar but it does have a slightly lower glycemic index (GI). By having a slightly lower GI you’re less likely to have that impending sugar crash that you get after having your favourite sugar filled cookies. What’s important to us is also fueling our bodies with only the most natural ingredients which is why we like to stick to whole foods and keeping ingredients in their most natural form.
So all in all we hope you found that both interesting and insightful. For us we really do care about what we fuel our bodies with so we are proud to shout about our ingredients, proving #criminallygood cookies doesn't mean complicated and unhealthy.
